How Kundavai by Chella Was Born

A Winter Day That Changed Everything

7/14/20263 min read

There comes a moment in a woman’s life when she realizes she has been living for everyone else.

Fulfilling expectations.

Playing different roles.

Constantly adapting.

And somewhere along the way, she becomes quieter.

Not because she has less to say.

But because she has forgotten that her own voice matters.

I know that feeling.

For years, I believed confidence came from fitting in.

I thought strength meant adapting gracefully to every new role, every new expectation, and every new version of myself that life demanded.

Then, one winter day in Sweden, I looked into my wardrobe and realized I owned beautiful clothes, but none of them reflected who I was.

Everything asked me to fit in.

Nothing reminded me of the woman I wanted to become.

Looking for a Different Kind of Queen

I did not want to become a queen because I wanted a crown.

I wanted to become the kind of woman who could face difficulty with grace.

A woman who could make decisions with wisdom.

A woman who could hold responsibility without losing herself.

A woman whose presence came from character, not attention.

I began thinking about the Chola queens I had grown up hearing about.

Women remembered not simply for beauty or status, but for leadership, intelligence, cultural influence, and quiet strength.

I found myself searching for them again.

I wanted to understand how women like Kundavai might have faced uncertainty, responsibility, and difficult decisions within a kingdom.

How did they remain composed when everything around them demanded strength?

How did they lead without needing to be the loudest person in the room?

How did they carry power with grace?

The more I read, the more I realized I was not only looking for history.

I was looking for a way to become the woman I wanted to be.

A woman who did not need a crown to carry herself like a queen.

The Search That Changed Everything

That search eventually led me to fashion.

I began looking for clothing inspired by the women I admired most: the Chola queens.

I wanted something that carried their strength, their refinement, and their cultural legacy.

Not a costume.

Not clothing made only for a festival or special occasion.

I wanted something modern.

Something I could wear in Sweden.

Something that could belong in a contemporary wardrobe while still carrying the memory of where I came from.

I searched, but I found almost nothing.

Not because Chola history was small.

Not because its art, architecture, or symbolism lacked beauty.

But because so much of that visual language had never been translated into modern luxury fashion.

That moment became the beginning of Kundavai by Chella.

Building What I Couldn’t Find

I decided to create the pieces I had been searching for.

Knitwear that felt modern, refined, and wearable, yet deeply rooted in history.

Every design begins with research.

We study Chola architecture, sculpture, poetry, temple geometry, royal symbolism, and the visual language of the period.

We do not copy the past.

We translate it.

A temple line becomes a modern geometric pattern.

A sacred lotus becomes a jacquard motif.

Architectural details become borders, emblems, and textures.

History becomes something you can wear in everyday life.

The goal is not to recreate the past exactly as it was.

The goal is to carry its spirit forward.

Why Knitwear?

I chose knitwear because it feels intimate.

It stays close to the body.

It becomes part of everyday life.

You can wear it to work, while travelling, meeting friends, building a business, raising a family, or simply moving through an ordinary day.

I wanted heritage to feel lived in, not displayed from a distance.

Luxury should not exist only for special occasions.

It should be something that accompanies you.

Something that reminds you of your strength when life becomes demanding.

Something that helps you feel grounded in who you are.

More Than Clothing

Kundavai by Chella is not only about creating beautiful knitwear.

It is about creating a reminder.

A reminder that you never needed permission to be yourself.

A reminder that softness and strength can exist together.

A reminder that leadership does not always need to be loud.

A reminder that heritage is not something we must leave behind in order to move forward.

For me, true luxury begins within.

It is the confidence to choose yourself.

It is the freedom to stop shrinking.

It is the courage to carry your history without allowing it to limit your future.

This brand is for the woman who no longer asks for permission to be herself.

The woman who does not need a crown to know she is a queen.

This Is Only the Beginning

This is only the beginning.
